National Association Against Consumer Fraud  - NAACF  www.naacf.org ~ as seen on WESH Ch 2 / Consumer Link
The National Association Against Consumer Fraud is not satisfied with the conventional methods of reducing consumer fraud. There are many organizations doing fine work to educate consumers. Information is readily available now more than ever, yet consumer fraud and complaints about unethical business practices are at an all time high. We want to start at the root of the problem; the businesses themselves. The NAACF interviewed thousands of businesses in numerous industries throughout North Carolina and Central Florida. Business owners provided us valuable information that will benefit consumers when selecting a business to provide a product or service. Unfortunately, we also found many of the unethical practices and shortcuts many businesses take that are not in the best interest of consumers.

It is the NAACF's opinion that in order to reduce consumer fraud, you need to take away the revenue from the businesses committing fraud or unethical practices. If their revenue stream is diminished, they will need to change. Through our interviews and research, we hope to educate consumers to make sound decisions in selecting businesses and bring revenue to the honest community minded businesses.

  1. For Consumers looking to select a business:

For each industry researched, we have provided a simple effective list of what to look for, questions to ask and what to avoid when interviewing and selecting prospective businesses in each industry. The information was provided to the NAACF by business owners we interviewed in each industry. The information we compiled is a tool for you to utilize when selecting a business to provide a product or service you need. We will continually up-date our consumer information list as we continue to interview more and more businesses across the country. Next to our information list on each industry will be a business we selected for that industry and market. Every business selected by the National Association Against Consumer Fraud has passed our background check and agreed to adhere to our code of ethics. Our qualified businesses will provide specific information on their individual businesses.

  2. For Businesses:

The National Association Against Consumer Fraud has spent a great deal of time interviewing consumers about why one business is selected over another. Many businesses complain that it all boils down to price. A business that assumes that could not be more wrong. Many times the reason price becomes the #1 factor is because consumers can not differentiate between the products, services, training or experience of competing businesses. Only when consumers ask the proper questions do they find out and appreciate the real differences between competing businesses. Unfortunately, most people do not ask the right questions or verify that the answers are correct. For honest, qualified businesses the NAACF affords you the opportunity to educate consumers, help your community, and provide you a distinct competitive advantage. Why is this important? Because we know that educated consumers do not select a business solely by price, they select someone they feel is qualified and they can trust. Together, we can help consumers and ethical businesses alike through education, which will ultimately reduce the revenue stream of unethical and unqualified businesses.

With all that having been said, it is imperative to select an inspection company that is qualified to perform an inspection that can produce an evaluation of the components of a dwelling or structure showing their current condition, how they perform in relation to other components and the approximate cost  to perform maintenance, repair, or replacement.
'Food for Thought - when a new vehicle is purchased, there is an immediate loss of more than 20% of the purchase price when the title is issued, and you have to live with your purchase and the payments for the oncoming months or years.
When you purchase a Home, you may not experience the same immediate loss, however, the unexpected costs of correcting unforeseen or latent damages may very well exceed what you are prepared to spend or are able to spend and very well could result in your not being able to maintain your home, compelling you to liquidate your investment.
A prospective client will give considerable thought to items or issues that they may be aware of, however, a Professional Home Inspector will have the knowledge and experience to detect many minor and major issues that very well can and does affect the final purchase price. The Client will know that in order to reach a conclusion regarding the purchase, they must have an in-depth written report to support that conclusion.
The Professional Home Inspector must have the education, training, and actual experience in the functions and operation of the respective components to be qualified to issue the required report.
One would not expect to seek out an inexperienced or unqualified inspector  - one who has taken a week-end short course in "How to be a Home Inspector" and / or purchased a "Certified Home Inspector Certificate" with no independent testing procedures or verification of experience.
Consider very carefully the qualifications of a home inspector and the price they are quoting you.
Remember, a low price is a direct reflection of the inspectors education, knowledge, experience and quality.
To most people, the purchase of a home is the most important and expensive purchase they will make in their lifetime, don't be the one to risk this investment based on the lowest cost or price of something as important as a home inspection.
